Why I Think It’s Important To Keep Your Word

My dad came to LA for a weekend vacation.

He had just arrived and said, “I have to fly back to SF today because I forgot I promised my friend I would have lunch with him.”

This wasn’t a special lunch – it was a regular lunch. I thought it was a little extreme and said, “I’m sure he would understand if you think it’s better to reschedule.”

Nope. A promise is a promise, so he paid $400 to fly back to San Francisco, had lunch with his friend, and then flew back to LA to continue his vacation.

My dad is one of the most reliable people on this planet. He doesn’t talk a lot but when he does, he means what he says.

Nobility at its finest.

Growing up, he was always there for me when I needed. Picking me up from the airport on time (on time is a big thing for him), showing up when I got my heart broken multiple times, even into adulthood. I would call him crying and he would fly down to see me.

I know how good it feels to have someone reliable in my life so I try my best to be that for others.

There was ONE time in my career I punched in the wrong photoshoot date in my calendar. It was for an Engagement Session.

While on a hike (because I thought that Sunday I had free) my client called saying, “We’re here at Union Station!.” I was confused for a couple seconds and then my heart dropped.

I almost cried!

I told my client the mistake I made and floored it over to the shoot, being an hour late. I must have apologized 10 times. Luckily she was understanding and said, “Don’t worry, it happens!.”

If there is one thing I hate, it’s being that person. Sure there are times when you get really sick or need to change plans, but if I can help it, I will always try my best to do what I say.

Keeping your word shows love, not only to the other person but to yourself.

Also…

When you do everything you say, your words become more powerful.

That way when you speak words, they are truly real. For example, if you say something like, “I’m going to be famous,” the universe knows you mean it compared to someone who doesn’t follow through with other things. Keeping your word allows you to literally speak things into existence.

Anyway, I’m writing this post because it’s important to me.

As my dad always says, and I agree (maybe because I’m his kid), “Be reliable.”
