3 Ways To Effectively Grow

No matter how old I get, I always want to continue to grow and evolve. I’ve learned that it starts at the core – change yourself and everything around you changes.

There are a ton of books to read, seminars to attend, and therapists to see. Different things work for different people. No matter which path you choose, I think these 3 things definitely work for effective growth:

1. Get people involved.  I have a lone wolf personality – I like to do things on my own. If I were to stay in my comfort zone I would choose to read self-help books. What I’ve learned is that reading books will give you more information but not transformation. If you really want to grow, get other people involved.

Other people help reveal your blind spots. You can’t see them on your own because you think and hear things the way you always have. Whether it’s friends, family, or strangers at a seminar, get other people involved. Talk about what’s bothering you and what you want to change. Be vulnerable.

2. Get out of your comfort zone.  I was at dinner in Venice Beach the other night and my eyes scanned the menu. Oo, brussel sprouts. My best friend looked at me and said, “You eat brussel sprouts at home every freakin’ day. Get something else.”  (This is also what happens when you get other people involved. They hold you accountable). It’s funny because I’ll do extreme things to get out of my comfort zone like jump out of a plane with no hesitation but I will eat the same damn thing every night. Things will never change if you continue to do things the same, so that night I ordered a steak sandwich with papa fritas. Muy bueno.

3. Do the work.  This separates successful people from unsuccessful people. Everyone knows that to lose weight, all you have to do is eat a healthy diet and exercise. The people who are fit actually do these two things. Most people aren’t willing to put in the work because it’s excruciating and sucks. To get results, you must do the work. DO. THE. WORK. It will be worth it.

  1. Good thoughts, CC. I’m very similar to you in point #1, and agree that getting someone/others involved and making it known that you’re aiming for something helps you actually make things happen. Keep “doing the work,” friend.
